I’m the project leader for a group of programmers with the task of fixing defects in our source. Planning the work in alignment with our patch releases. I’m also a gatekeeper for incoming defect reports, deciding if we have enough input to start working on the issue or if we need more information from the reporter. Here I have use for my background as a programmer and my knowledge of our source code.

What’s it like working at Clavister?
Challenging and Interesting.

Education?

Name: Neal

Age: 48

What is your role?
Team Leader Project Office

How long have you
been with Clavister?

I'v been at Claviter since April 2007.

Can you describe your job?
I head-up the Project Office at Clavister. That involves managing my own project, advising and mentoring the other project managers at Clavister, building the services provided by the Project Office and managing the activities of our outsourced development team in Ukraine. I provide the "big-picture" on project status and where that project is going. In doing that, I show each team-member the significant role that they play in making the "big-picture" a reality.

What’s it like working at Clavister?
The complexities of the product that we work with, provide constant challenges to finding a way to get things done. It is wonderful to work with colleagues that have a thorough knowledge of the technicalities and always find a clever solution. They are people that I can rely on.

Education?
PMP and BA Languages, Witwatersrand University, Johannesburg, South Africa

How has your education helped in your job?
I would expect an Employer to be very wary of project managers that either have no formal education or have little experience. Projects will challenge a manager all the time on what is the right thing to do and what is everything that must be done. For that I reference my education. Whether some action will be successful and effective or not, is what I reference from my experience.

It forms a solid base for me to stand on. I’m not sure it is absolutely necessary for me to have, but it has made things easier for me. My job is like pretty much everything else, it takes a lot of effort to become really good at it (and to keep being good at it).
