Attaching Connectors

This section describes the connectors that need to be attached before starting the configuration.

This section includes the following topics:

Connecting the Console Port

The final phase of the initial set-up requires actions performed on the actual firewall. These are carried out using the Console port on the firewall.

If you are installing a Clavister Firewall Software product, and plan to use a monitor and keyboard for the initial set-up, you can ignore this section and skip to section Attaching your firewall to a network.

The serial console port is an RS-232 port that enables a connection to a PC or terminal for monitoring and initial configuration of the firewall. To use the console port, you need the following equipment:

To connect a terminal to the console port, follow these steps:

  1. Set the terminal protocol as described previously.

  2. Connect one of the connectors of the RS-232 cable directly to the console port on your firewall hardware.

  3. Connect the other end of the cable to the terminal or the serial connector of the computer running the communications software.

Attaching your firewall to a network

The initial configuration of the firewall configures which Ethernet interface to be used for remote management. Any interface can be used for this purpose. Naturally, the selected interface can also be used for normal firewalling tasks.

Throughout this guide, the sixth interface (named if1) in the Clavister M560 appliance model is used as management interface. For your specific installation, please substitute any references to if1 with the name of your chosen interface.

The intended interface should be attached to the same network as the management server (or a network accessible from the management server via one or more routers).

Connect the interface to a switch or hub in the network using a regular straight-through Ethernet cable.

The firewall appliance can be connected directly to the network interface of the management server without using any switch or hub, but please note that in that case, a crossover cable must be used.

Connecting Power

To connect the AC power cord, follow these steps:

  1. Plug one end of the AC power cord into the AC power receptacle on the back panel of the firewall appliance.

  2. Plug the other end of the AC power cord into the grounded AC power outlet.

  3. To startup and configure the installed firewall, proceed to the section Clavister Firewall Configuration.

If you are installing a Clavister Firewall Software product on your own choice of hardware platform, please consult your hardware installation guide for instructions on how to connect power in the correct way.
