European Organisations are Taking Cyber Security More Seriously, Clavister’s new Survey Shows

9th October 2023 – Örnsköldsvik, Sweden – Clavister, a leader in European cybersecurity solutions for mission-critical applications, has published 2023 European cyber security market report, shedding light on the increased awareness about cyber risk and investment priorities by European organisations.

Clavister collaborated with Coleman Parkes Research to conduct a market survey in July-September 2023 in Sweden and Germany and reached out to 500 organisations, spanning public sector, energy utilities, retail and SMBs. The report summarises their responses and provides an insight into the shifting landscape of Europe’s cyber security, its readiness to support hybrid working and upcoming regulations like NIS2 Directive; and changing technology requirements to support Zero Trust.

Key findings from Clavister’s research include:

  • 88% of organisations who responded to our survey are upgrading or planning to upgrade their cybersecurity infrastructure in response to the Russia-Ukraine war.
  • 87% of businesses consider whether their cybersecurity will be produced in Europe when making investment decisions.
  • 24% of cybersecurity experts are resorting to ‘defence in depth’ and using two or more layers of cybersecurity – and 78% of the rest are actively considering it.
  • Only one in 10 companies (9%) believe they are already compliant with the NIS 2 Directive.
  • 41% of respondents said they understand the concept of Zero Trust extremely or very well, while one in ten (10%) admit that they have not heard of the concept at all.

The global cyber threat landscape remains challenging and across Europe, cyber criminals are targeting critical infrastructure and public sector to cause operational disruption and reputational damage. Sweden reported 52 serious DDoS attacks in the first half of 2023 as compared to 10 during the same time three years back. Russia has overtaken China as the main cyber threat to German businesses, according to a recent report (German). In this context, European organisations can’t afford the status quo.  Positive trend we have found through our survey, running in its second year, is that organisations have indeed started to consider cyber security more strategically and to mitigate cyber risks as part of broader business risks. And this shift is here to stay!

John Vestberg, CEO of Clavister, said: “Cyber security landscape is changing in Europe. Remote or hybrid working post Covid resulted in the need to expand the perimeter of cyber security to secure employees irrespective of their location. This is also combined with the increased adoption of cloud and prevalence of hybrid networks and IT infrastructure, which of course has implications on cyber security too. Then the current geopolitical climate and growing attacks of our critical infrastructure, because of all of this, we are seeing a marked shift in attitude towards strategic cyber security. Origin of cyber security is also becoming a consideration than ever before and we see an increasing demand for European produced security and European cloud/hosting. We need to collectively grow European cyber security ecosystem and make it self-sufficient.”
